Environment Introduction
Server Message Block (SMB), also known as Common Internet File System (CIFS), is mainly used for providing shared access to files. CIFS/SMB is the standard file sharing protocol on the Microsoft Windows platform.
You can access shared folders on your Android device using File Manager. Your computer server should support CIFS/SMB protocol.
Setup Connection
You need setup a LAN connection before accessing shared folder. Please make sure your device is inside LAN environment and WIFI is turned on, and then follow the steps below:
1. Click "Network" button from file manager toolbar to open network activity. | |
2. Then click "Create" button from network activity toolbar to launch connection creation dialog. | |
3. From connection creation context dialog, choose "LAN Connection" menu item to launch LAN connection dialog. |

When testing connection failed, sometimes it is because there is configuration problem on your server such as firewall settings. You can test shared folders using other computer to verify the configuration.
Bookmark Connection
You can create bookmark to LAN connection in the same network activity page.
Long click on the connection entry, from popup dialog, choose "Boomark" menu item to add LAN connection to bookmarks. |
Delete Connection
You can delete LAN connection in the same network activity page.
Long click on the connection entry, from popup dialog, choose "Delete" menu item to remove the connection settings. |
Please notice that after you delete the connection, the bookmarks or home screen shortcuts which point to this connection may be no longer valid.
Media Streaming
You can play media files from shared folder directly without downloading them.
The media files include both audio file(mp3, wma, etc.) and video file(avi, mkv, rmvb, wmv, etc.). You should have media player installed which has media streaming support.
